A Message from the Florida NENA President, A. Keith Godwin, ENP
Alachua County E911 Coordinator
Joint APCO/NENA Spring 2017 Conference
Wow! 389 registrations…some may be listed twice so this number may not be 100% accurate. This was my first venture into helping to plan a conference, a joint conference at that. Several of you helped out, especially Edith Taylor, Trisha Davis, Lesil Taylor, Linda Woloski, Rolf Preuss, Eddie Williams, Jeff Ballard, Michelle Clark, Mark Whitby, and Carolyn Dill-Collier. Our next joint APCO/NENA conference is 22-27 April 2018, Lake Buena Vista Wyndham Lake Resort at 1850 Hotel Plaza Blvd.
One item that repeatedly came up during our conference planning calls was the need for projectors and screens. Florida NENA is currently considering the purchase of two projectors, two screens, and a speaker system to be maintained by the Education Committee Chair.
Is there a particular subject you are interested in or have a good understanding of? If so, consider presenting a class at a conference. At the spring 2017 conference in Daytona, Amber Siena from Osceola County gave a great presentation on text-to-911. The call for papers went out in August of 2016, about 9 months before the May 2017 spring conference. So if you plan on presenting a class…get to work now!
We need a theme for the next joint conference. Throw your ideas out there at your regional meetings and lets’ get started on that item now! Along with the theme comes T-shirt design and decoration ideas.
Fall 2017 Florida NENA Conference
On Tuesday, the 13th of June, during the Florida NENA Executive Board conference call, the decision was made to hold the fall conference at the Hilton St Petersburg Bayfront during the period 5-9 Nov 2017.
Fall 2018 Florida NENA Conference
This conference is tentatively scheduled for 21-25 Oct 2018 at the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa located at 4000 Sandestin Blvd South, Miramar Beach, Fl 32550. 850-267-9600. Lesil Taylor from Bay County is currently working on acquiring a contract for review.
There are several initiatives circling the state right now, such as regional ESInet projects, text-to-911, 9-1-1 Coordinators Association, and the 9-1-1 fee increase. The Florida NENA Executive Board may be discussing some of these initiatives to see which ones we, as an organization, can actively and effectively support.
E911 Board Meetings & Grant Applications
I regularly attend the E911 Board meetings and am surprised at the number of counties that submit a grant application or a change to a grant, but are not in attendance or on the conference call. If you have a grant on the agenda, you really should be available to answer questions. As a last resort, if you cannot be there representing your organization, see if your vendor/service provider will attend.
Our current Florida NENA Past President, Rolf Preuss, may hold the record for the longest term in office as the President. Rolf did a good job keeping things together while privately employed by a service provider/vendor. Thank you Rolf for your commitment and sacrifice.
During the fall conference last month in Daytona, a few of you approached me about assisting with conferences. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to those that said they would help. Conference planning is one activity where participation by several people really helps.
If you look at the mission statement within the Florida NENA by-laws, you will find phrases like foster the technological advancement; encourage an atmosphere of mutual cooperation; protection of human life; assistance to other 9-1-1 agencies. I think if we could focus on the mission statement during the next year while I am the Florida NENA President we will be actively engaged in a number of worthwhile activities.
